Changes in Store for Disney's Hollywood Studios
Coming in October 2008 will be the recently announced High School Musical 3: Senior Year and later this year, the Studios will host the annual Night of Joy event for the first time and welcome back ABC Super Soap Weekend. Next year, the park will unveil The American Idol Experience, host the first Grad Nite events and welcome back ESPN: The Weekend and Star Wars Weekends. Other changes in 2009 will be the elimination of the daily Fantasmic! shows. Fantasmic! will be performed two times weekly, generally Mondays and Thursdays, and more often during the busiest times of the year.
The interior of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland will open in time for the December holiday season, offering guests a reawakened version of its classic walkthrough presentation kissed with vibrant scenes of Aurora, her charming prince, the evil Maleficent and other characters from the beloved fairy tale film.
The Walt Disney World Resort will release a new reservation booking system for dining, recreation and tour reservations in late October 2008. In the future, Travel Agents and Guests will be able to make dining reservations online at disneyworld.com with this new reservation booking system. The launch date for this enhancement will be announced at a later date.
The Disneyland Resort Paris resort has launched Bluetooth technology within its second theme park to offer visitors free information about the site's attractions. Four Bluetooth terminals have been set up in the Walt Disney Studios Park. They are situated in the waiting line ofCrush's Coaster, in theTwilight Zone Tower of Terror, by the information panel at the exit of Studio 1 and in theEn Coulisse restaurant. Guests who activate the Bluetooth reception on their mobile phones will be able to find out how long the waiting line is to a particular ride or find out the starting times for the park's shows.
Tokyo Disneyland Hotel marked its grand opening on July 8 2008, in a year when the entire Tokyo Disney Resort celebrates its 25 anniversary. The new $566 million hotel stands in front of the main entrance of Tokyo Disneyland Park, with the Disney Resort Line’s Tokyo Disneyland Station in between. In addition to many grand amentites, the hotel also contains the first international location of Disney's Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boutique.
The interactive live show, "Pocahontas & Her Forest Friends", will go dark on September 27, 2008, after a ten year run at Animal Kingdom's Camp Minnie Mickey. Walt Disney World has not released any replacement plans for the amphitheater at this time.
The Walt Disney World resort has announced that it will discontinue two of its character meals in October 2008 and January 2009. The lunch service at Epcot's Garden Grill will end October 5, 2008 ending the Chip & Dale's Harvest Feast Character Lunch. The location will be open for Dinner only, starting October 6, 2008. Also, being dicontinued is Goofy's Liberate Your Appetite Character Dinner at Magic Kingdom's Liberty Tree Tavern. This character experience will be discontinued January 5, 2009.
Former magician Francisco Guerra developed a machine that produces tiny bubbles filled with air and a little helium, forms the foam into shapes and pumps them into the sky. According to Guerra, the Walt Disney Company will use one of the machines next month to send clouds shaped like Mickey Mouse heads into the air at Walt Disney World. A single Flogo can travel as far as 30 miles and as high as 20,000 feet, reach a width up to 4 ft long, and the machine can produce one every 15 seconds.
Walt Disney World is adding a golf option -- nine holes on the par 36 Oak Trail course -- to its "Water Park Fun & More" add-on to Magic Your Way tickets. The add-on already gave Guests the choice of admission to Disney's Blizzard Beach water park, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon water park, DisneyQuest, Downtown Disney Pleasure Island or Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The Water Park Fun & More add-on costs $50 per ticket. Normally, green fees at Oak Trail run $38 for adults, and $19 for juniors, ages 17 and under. The golf option also is being added as a free benefit to Disney World Premium Annual Passes.
Disney has announced the birth of a baby African elephant, the fourth one in history born at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The new calf has not yet been named. His mother is Moyo, a 26-year-old resident who has been at DAK since the beginning, and is also mother of the first calf born at the park, Tufani in 2003.
The Walt Disney World Resort unveiled a new vision for Downtown Disney, with extraordinary new shopping, dining and other experiences including a completely re-imagined Pleasure Island. Over the next year, the 120-acre entertainment, shopping, dining complex will add a number of one-of-a-kind, immersive experiences for guests. Downtown Disney will even get its own iconic attraction, in the form of a giant, tethered balloon that will take guests 300 feet into the air to view the amazing vistas of Walt Disney World Resort. To make way for the new offerings, all 6 of the exsiting night clubs on Pleasure Island will close on September 27, 2008.
Walt Disney Parks & Resorts launched The Disney Parks Channel on YouTube on June 25, 2008. To help commemorate the launch of this new YouTube Channel, the group is also launching the My Favorite Disney Parks Memory Contest. Eligible participants can submit a video of their family having fun at a Disney Theme Park with the hopes of a Grand Prize of a stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite. The contest video submissions will become part of the growing library of content available on the new Disney Parks YouTube channel.
Tourism Victoria has confirmed Melbourne, Austrilia is vying for the right to be featured as one of the world's four great food cities when the Epcot International Food & Wine festival kicks-off in September 2008. Tourism Victoria marketing director Don Richter said Disney had invited Victoria to bid because of its reputation as a food and wine destination. Other frontrunners for the 4 featured spots included New Orleans, Copenhagen and Rio de Janeiro.
